Patty’s Perspective November 2005

MARS, MUD and MAYHEM

by Patty the Astrologer

Mars is ready for another close-up. For the second time in nearly 60,000 years, the Red Planet will swing unusually close to Earth this weekend, appearing as a yellow twinkle in the night sky.

Mars' latest rendezvous will not match its record-breaking approach to Earth in 2003, when it hovered from 35 million miles away. But more sky gazers this time around can glimpse the fourth rock from the sun because it will glow above the horizon.

"This is the best we're going to see Mars, so we should strike the iron while it is hot," said Kelly Beatty, executive editor of Sky & Telescope magazine. Credit the Los Angeles Times, 25 October 2005.

Mars

Mars went into the astrological sign of Taurus on 27 July this year, went retrograde on 1 October, so he will be in the sign of Taurus for a long time – until 17 February 2006. He is also very close to the earth, as you all know by now. I am often asked what it means when a planet comes close to the earth. Astrology teaches that the planets and their relationships with each other have an influence on earth, which includes us. It may be that the planets alter the speed and intensity of the cosmic wind and that is what influences earth. Whichever, you may be sure that Mars’ influence is much stronger when he is close than when he is farther away. He did not jump into this proximity, he has been slowly approaching, becoming very close in the sign of Taurus, not only traveling at Taurus’ slow pace, but going retrograde, and taking twice as long as usual traveling through a sign.

Mars is associated with men, action, fires, wars and temperature; Mars likes it hot and fast. Taurus is associated with money, possessions, the earth, and the status quo. She is warm, moist and slow, trapping Mars and causing him to stall.

Mars has had a challenging relationship with Neptune during September and October, with Neptune being in the sign of Aquarius, the unusual and unexpected. Neptune rules water, meaning rain and snow (among other things). Throw Mercury in the mix and we have trouble. Mercury represents the wind, who was fighting with Neptune and the rain and challenging Mars who is stalled. Sometimes the Moon joins in, playing a dangerous game with Pluto and relates to the dislocation of many people.

Mars action may be stalled, but he is not stopped. He is relentless in Taurus, with his usual fast action contained for a while, then bursting out with much force, focused on one spot, as Taurus would. Mix in a lot of rain, with the action stalled and the wind whipping things up, no wonder the October hurricanes spent a lot of time over one place. And this is not over, expect more of this during November and again in January of 2006.

Mud

Scientists had stated that the lands wiped clean by the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia would not produce crops for years. What really happened? The native population of Indonesia did not hear the scientists, so they planted anyway, and guess what? Record crops. Surprise! The mud from the tsunami turns out to be fertilizer. There is mud everywhere: California has had huge ocean swells because of earthquakes in Japan, bringing mud to the shores. The heavy rains in Europe resulted in floods and mud there, too. Guatemala, Mexico and other Middle and South American countries have had hurricanes, heavy winds and floods resulting in mud. New England and some of the Mid-Atlantic states in the United States had a Northeaster, resulting in floods, mud and erosion of the coastline, so the Gulf States are not the only place seeing erosion. The mud from the hurricanes in Louisiana turned out not be as toxic as first reported, what if that mud turns out to be fertilizer?

The mud represented by Taurus is the earth nurtured by the spring rains when man plants, resulting in new crops in Virgo time, the fall. Symbolically speaking, when Mars makes his zodiac travel to the sign of Virgo, we should see the fruits of the present so-called chaos. The new crops, new buildings, people settled wherever they choose to go, should be evident. Mars goes to Virgo’s house in the third week of July 2006, not so far away.

Mayhem

Mars alone does not create mayhem or chaos, he needs company to do that. Neptune and Mercury are his companions now, and Mars stirs them up, energizing the rain and wind, resulting in disturbance. Neptune is associated with chaos, as in “the chaos before the form”. We need things to become disorganized and disoriented to be replaced with the new, this is Neptune’s job, again among other things. To those of you who are mathematical, you know there is mathematical order in chaos, so it is with Neptune. She only appears to be an illusion, and she seems to be glamorous, but there is creativity and newness within the change. While we are looking at the so called bad things the media shows over and over, people are quietly and persistently helping and establishing a new way. The mayhem of dislocated people, communities wiped out and the changing of the coastlines are all in divine order according to Mother Earth. She does not take things personally. The mayhem will result in change in how we prepare for the earth changes we are experiencing, change in how we help our neighbors, change of whom we think our neighbors are and you may even move, contributing to the mass migrations of people that is happening now. Neptune is one of the planets who represents large groups, larger than our own clan or family, and we can see that the whole world is going through drastic change. If it is not earthquakes, tidal waves, hurricanes and cyclones, northeaster’s it is wars, threats of wars and famines. The finances of the world will have to change in order to afford the humanitarian help needed by so many. People are already giving much, which means the changing priorities of what is important.

This is an interesting time, may we enjoy it.
