Spring is here, and even though it is still cool, it will soon be time to plant. Mars is in the cool sign of Gemini through 13 April, and Venus is in the cool sign of Aquarius through 5 April, meaning cooler and windier weather than usual. When Mars and Venus travel into the signs of Cancer and Pisces, respectively, expect some precipitation and warmer temperatures. I am avid gardener, feeder of birds, and provider of cover for beneficial insects and small animals, and have a Certified Back Yard Habitat. About the tenth of March, the scout hummingbirds arrived. Thank goodness I had remembered to put out the hummingbird feeders. The hummers are not all here and the scouts may only have passed through, but they know they have food in my yard. How they let their friends know I have no idea, but they return yearly.

Those of us who love to garden are eager to get our fingers in the soil. I have personally experimented for years planting according to the sign of the Moon and it works. People comment that plants do things for me they don’t do for others. My astrological past life point is in Taurus, the sign of spring planting, so it seems I was born knowing a little of this. Sharing this little bit of helpful astrological planting information may help you know ahead of time when to plant.

For years the town I live in was a farming town and I noticed that the successful farmers planted in Taurus’ month and harvested in Virgo’s month.

The Moon speeds at a rate between 13 and 15 degrees a day, passing through each astrological sign each month, and one sign twice in one month. So, you can see there are many good times to plant in one month. I keep it simple, and plant any time the Moon is in a planting sign. Some say never to plant during the full Moon, others say the new and full moons are both good for planting, I plant when the Moon is right, no matter if it is a full Moon or not, and it works. When is this? Best times are when the Moon is in the earth signs of Taurus and Virgo, but not Capricorn. Next best are the water signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. When the Moon is in times other than good for planting, it is good to weed, compost or rearrange the garden ornaments, create cover for the small animals, birds and bugs.

Plants need to rest between November and February here in the northern hemisphere, so I don’t plant or fuss with them at all. What we are talking about is planting in the good Moon planting signs between March and the end of October. It is best to sow seeds and set plants outside in the soil after the new Moon in Taurus in May. Before then a few cold days kill them off. March and April are good for starting seeds indoors, transplanting or adding soil to house plants and cutting away the stalks of plants left from winter. How about the southern hemisphere? even though your seasons are the reverse of the northern hemisphere, your Moon chart will reflect the accurate time and day of the Moon planting signs for your location.
